Pennsylvania, Philadelphia leaders announce $30M to enhance access, safety at Sports Complex

June 12, 2026

Philadelphia’s Sports Complex will undergo a series of significant infrastructure and transportation improvements following a surge of public and private funding.

State, city and industry officials revealed late last month a $30 million initiative seeking to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and support long-term economic growth in south Philadelphia.

In preparation for future development and growth, the project will feature several vital infrastructure upgrades, including a new westbound entrance ramp to Interstate 76, the addition of a second left-turn lane from Front Street onto I-95 North, and the installation of 19 smart traffic signals throughout the area.

Additional improvements include a centralized event operations center to coordinate traffic management, enhanced signage and wayfinding systems, and multiple transportation studies focused on future corridor upgrades and freight movement.

Officials believe these changes will make it easier for residents, commuters, and sports fans to travel through the area while reducing bottlenecks and improving pedestrian safety.

The Sports Complex is home to all of Philadelphia’s major professional sports stadiums and franchises, including Citizens Bank Park, Xfinity Mobile Arena and Philadelphia Stadium. The stadium plays host to the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and Flyers along with the Temple University Owl’s collegiate football team.

The sports venues attract more than eight million visitors across over 300 events and generate approximately $2.3 billion in economic impact for the city each year, according to elected officials.

The project is expected to strengthen economic development throughout South Philadelphia, including nearby destinations such as the Navy Yard, PhilaPort, and the Bellwether District. Together, these investments position the Sports Complex and surrounding region for continued growth and increased economic opportunity in the years ahead.
