The Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) approved the final design to expand its western concourse during its June 2 authority board meeting. Although the final construction cost has not yet been released, officials anticipate opening bidding later this summer with construction beginning in September.
The XNA Western Concourse Expansion project will significantly improve the airport’s ability to manage congestion and meet passenger needs. Among these plans, the project will build seven new gates in total. In addition, the airport will remove two existing gates.
Additional features will include new hold rooms, restrooms, concessions space and improved access to the airfield. The concourse itself will feature a gable roof design to ensure long-term cost efficiency while blending in with the rest of the airport architecture.
While the project has been highly anticipated, it was not the only item of interest at the SNA authority board meeting. Among the other meeting items, the board approved a nearly $2 million design contract for a parking deck and landscaped plaza.
In addition, the board authorized the $4.6 million purchase of roughly 100 acres of property along the airport’s east side. Ownership of the three parcels sets the stage for a potential future expansion and runway. However, airport officials don’t anticipate needing the second runway for another two or three decades.
