Massachusetts offers funding to upgrade World Cup infrastructure, security

February 9, 2026

Applications are now open for $10 million in Massachusetts state-funded grants to help cover 2026 FIFA World Cup-related costs such as security, transportation and community events. Massachusetts will host seven matches this summer as part of the international tournament, which is held every four years at rotating locations. This year’s competition will take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

State leaders say attracting major sporting events provides a boost to tourism and spurs economic activity. The grant program was created through the Fiscal Year 2025 supplemental budget to help host communities manage expenses related to infrastructure, communications, and day-to-day operations.

The competitive grants, which require a 1-to-1 local funding match, are available to municipalities and public nonprofit agencies directly involved in hosting or supporting World Cup activities. Eligible expenses include security and emergency services, transportation and traffic management, community events, visitor support, and other operational costs connected to the tournament.

Applicants must detail how the funds will be used and show that the expenses are directly tied to World Cup-related needs. Applications are due March 4, with awards expected to be announced by April.
