Martinsville plans $50M courthouse renovation project

June 29, 2026

The city of Martinsville, Virginia, is entering the planning stage of a municipal courthouse construction and renovation project.

As Martinsville’s General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court facility no longer meets Virginia Court Standards, city council members approved an agreement with private firm to begin the planning phase of a project to renovate the Martinsville Municipal Building to house the courts.

The current courthouse building could not be configured to comply with state requirements without major renovation and expansion, leaving the options of building a new courthouse or renovating another existing building.

The council had previously considered building a new courthouse, but the projected cost was about $100 million. In an effort to cut that cost roughly in half, the council, along with architects and attorneys, opted for remodeling the 1968-era Municipal Building to meet the needs of the courts and comply with state standards.

Even though the 58-year-old building will have the renovation needs of any aging building, the estimated cost is significantly less than new construction. With a projected cost of about $50 million, the council sees this as the best option.

Moseley will begin the planning phase by assessing the condition of the current Municipal Building to determine the extent of renovation needed to house the courts and comply with state requirements. A timeline for bids and construction has not been announced.

As state requirements for court facilities continue to evolve, especially regarding space, accessibility and security, many municipalities across Virginia are facing similar challenges with older courthouse buildings.
