The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has opened the public comment period for an upcoming roundabout construction project located along Illinois 76 and Caledonia Road in Boon County. While the project has been funded, the department has not released a cost estimate or timeline.
The project is currently in the first phase, with IDOT conducting a preliminary engineering and environmental study on the project’s impact and feasibility. The study will analyze optimal traffic control alternatives to better enhance the intersection’s safety and mobility.
IDOT plans to convert the intersection into a roundabout to better serve traffic needs, enhancing circulation while mitigating accident risk. The modern roundabout will feature a 20-foot-wide circulating single lane. The center of the roundabout, alongside the long splitter islands, will better deflect incoming vehicles.
The project’s vision includes ample space for future realignments of nearby roads to better connect them to the intersection. To facilitate this, IDOT has proposed installing a 14-foot-wide concrete truck apron around the outside of the central island. Lighting will also be installed, according to project documents.
IDOT will host a public meeting covering the project’s proposed improvements on Aug. 27. The public and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to attend and request additional information from the department.
