Georgia secures $556M federal investment for 2026 military construction projects

December 29, 2025

Georgia will be the beneficiary of a $556 million federal bipartisan bill that will finance nearly a dozen military projects across the state.

Projects receiving the green light will prioritize building critical infrastructure for military bases, ranging from storage facilities to schools. The funding represents the largest investment in Georgia military construction and quality-of-life projects in 15 years.

One of the most prominent initiatives in the bill is the state’s $166 million plan to build an evidence storage facility at Fort Gillem. The fort – which currently operates as a logistics and law enforcement hub – will be able to expand its capabilities and establish its role as an essential defense asset for the state once the facility is completed.

The second highest award of $127.4 million will be used to build Dexter Elementary School at Fort Benning. The 117,000-square-foot building will replace the existing facility, expanding capacity up to 600 students from grades PreK to Grade 5 with additional learning spaces and amenities.

The project will include roadway paving, bus loading and unloading areas, parent drop-off zones, staff and visitor parking, a service and delivery area and sidewalks with covered walkways, canopies, signage and crosswalks. Additional components include fencing, external AT/FP features, landscaping, dog park relocation, exterior lighting, exterior play structures and outdoor learning areas. The fort will ensure there is proper storm drainage and storm water management. Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2026.

The final high-value project highlighted in the bill will allocate $119 million to the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay to expand a trident refit facility. The project will help ensure that the nation’s submarine programs are prepared to handle the arrival of the Columbia-class submarine, strengthening national security and improving military infrastructure.

The expansion builds on previous efforts to upgrade facilities and enhance security and energy infrastructure at the naval base. Improvements included in the expansion will primarily focus on ensuring the facility has the resources to overhaul, modernize and repair submarines. The base will will seven facilities, expand and renovate five existing ones and upgrade critical utility systems such as a chilled water plan and fiber infrastructure.

Additional projects being financed through the bill include:

  • $28 million to build a control tower at Robins Air Force Base.
  • $27 million to build a dining hall and services training facility at Savanna/Hilton Head IAP.
  • $17.5 million to build the 23rd Security Forces Squadron operation facility at Moody Air Force Base.
  • $11.4 million to build the C-13OJ corrosion control facility at Savannah/Hilton Head IAP.
  • $8 million to design an aircraft maintenance hangar at Fort Stewart.
  • $3.7 million to design an F-35A at Moody Air Force Base.
  • $3 million to design the main gate at Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

The bill also includes another $45 million to build complete barracks at Fort Stewart, exclusively for the Army. An additional $30 million increase over the president’s request for oversight and maintenance of privatized military housing was also folded into the bill. The Army, Navy and Air Force were allocated $10 million each to work claims and investigate and oversee privatized housing conditions.

The bipartisan bill was officially signed into law Nov. 12, 2025, following its subsequent passage through the U.S. Senate and House.
