Eastern Michigan University (EMU) will spend $42.5 million to renovate Roosevelt Hall in Ypsilanti after being selected to receive $30 million in state funding through a recently signed supplemental spending bill. Construction is expected to begin in November 2026.
The Roosevelt Hall Modernization project is a portion of a larger vision to expand the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. As part of the renovation, the university will relocate the college to the hall as its new home.
The plan would provide ample spaces to accommodate education guiding students along several career paths, including cybersecurity, construction management and aviation. Project details include renovating roughly 75,500 square feet of the building by creating student advising centers, faculty offices and collaboration and maker’s spaces for students.
A selection of additional support spaces slated for inclusion in the facility’s layout include:
- Specialty labs.
- Cybersecurity networks and labs.
- Computer and simulation labs.
- Virtual and augmented reality labs.
- Research labs.
- Student success suites.
- Student organization and academic support areas.
Additional improvements include addressing deferred maintenance and preserving assets throughout the building. These include repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other essential building systems; replacing the roof; installing fire suppression systems; and reworking outdated room layouts and sizes.
EMU will replace energy inefficient windows and other internal building envelope systems. Other details include updating interior finishes and ensuring the facility has adequate ADA accessibility.
The project represents the second phase of the university’s Engineering and Technology Complex plan. EMU completed the first phase – the renovation and expansion of Sill Hall – in 2020.
