The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a $600 million grant to support a bridge replacement project connecting communities in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Burlington County, New Jersey.
The Delaware River Bridge will undergo a full replacement following a 2017 incident where the bridge was closed for more than six weeks after a fracture occurred in one of the support trusses.
Officials said the event highlighted the need for improvements to the bridge, which is traveled upon by 67,000 motorists daily.
The funds will “advance” the PA Turnpike/I-95 Interchange Program. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said the program is designed to reduce congestion on County roadways and improve traffic flow in the Philadelphia region.
According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, Pennsylvania ranked second nationwide in 2024 for its number of structurally deficient bridges.
Upgrades to the bridge will include widening it from its current four-lane configuration. The project team will also look at different bridge designs, alignments and long-term solutions.
Following the alternatives analysis stage, preliminary design work will continue through 2027, officials said.
