The Mary Cariola Center in Henrietta, New York, has secured $4 million in state funding to support redevelopment of the former Marketplace Mall into a new campus for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The announcement comes as a private philanthropist committed $75 million to kick start the project.
The combined funding will support redevelopment of a large portion of the mall in Henrietta into a full-service campus that will bring educational, medical and therapeutic services together in one location. The project will also include the Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center, creating a coordinated hub focused on both education and healthcare services.
Plans for the campus include classrooms, therapy areas, adaptive technology labs and modified recreational spaces designed specifically for students with complex needs. The project would allow the organizations to expand services and modernize facilities while centralizing programs that are currently spread across multiple locations.
The project is still in the planning and feasibility stage, but the goal is to convert a large portion of the former Marketplace Mall into a centralized campus where education, medical care and therapy services are located in one place rather than spread across multiple facilities in the Rochester area.
When completed, the new campus is expected to expand access to specialized education and medical services for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities while giving new life to a large underused commercial property in Henrietta.
