Atlanta leads America’s smart cities with top technology infrastructure and connectivity scores, according to the new 2025 Smart City Index. The Georgia capital city achieved 88 out of 100 points in technology infrastructure, outpacing traditional tech centers like Boston and San Francisco in the comprehensive urban technology assessment.
To build the new index, smart building technology platform ProptechOS evaluated 95 cities across the U.S. and Europe using methodology that aligns with Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidelines. The analysis measured 17 equally-weighted metrics across three categories: technology infrastructure and connectivity, sustainability initiatives and technology job market strength.
The technology infrastructure category considers factors including mobile 5G speeds, the number of AI companies per capita, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) companies and the number of airports.
Sustainability initiatives include air quality, tree loss and gain, the number of electric vehicle charging points and the number of LEED-certified green buildings.
Technology job market strength considers the number of tech jobs advertised per capita.
Atlanta’s strong performance reflects the fourth-highest internet download and upload speeds among major U.S. cities. The city ranks third-highest for IoT companies per capita and fifth-highest for artificial intelligence companies relative to population size.
The city also demonstrates strong technology employment opportunities with 643 tech jobs advertised per 10,000 residents. This represents the seventh-highest rate of technology job advertisements among American cities analyzed in the study.
Other U.S. cities showed distinct strengths in different categories. San Francisco achieved the highest sustainability scores with strong electric vehicle charging infrastructure and green building certifications. Oakland led in technology job market metrics with 889 tech positions advertised per 10,000 people.
The smart city assessment methodology emphasizes measurable outcomes in connectivity infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and technology workforce development. Cities
performing well in these areas represent markets where technology procurement and implementation projects are most likely to succeed.
