Planning and development are underway on a $275 million project to build a bypass between two communities in Anson County, North Carolina.

A bypass is expected to improve traffic congestion near Wadesboro, while increasing traffic flow and freight transportation between Charlotte and Wilmington, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.
Detailed design alternatives will be determined as the project progresses, NCDOT said. NCDOT is considering bypass alternatives both to the north and south of U.S. 74, which is a popular route for truck traffic that experiences heightened congestion from seasonal travelers to the coast.
Final approval of the project’s environmental impact document is expected this spring, with final design being approved during Fiscal Year 2026-2027.
Right-of-way acquisition is projected in 2028, with construction expected to begin in 2030.
