Officials with Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas have announced the next phase of planning for Gerald J. Ford Stadium as officials enter the preliminary stages for future development.
Gerald J. Ford Stadium serves as the university’s athletic backbone, hosting sporting events and various other activities. The university has recently expressed an interest in further developing the stadium to keep pace with its own growth by establishing strategic partnerships with local companies.
Although nothing has been decided, SMU is assessing potential upgrades and expansions to keep the university competitively viable and appealing for new enrollment. Officials are assessing the viability of expanding the stadium’s available premium areas, elevating the fan experience while driving student and community engagement.
Notably, these capital projects will need additional funding to get them off the ground. The university is in the process of sourcing new revenue and may potentially establish strategic partnerships with local companies.
Officials recently announced that its integrated revenue generation division – Mustang Partners – raised $50 million in donations to subsidize athletics and education services. In addition, the institution secured an agreement to play two games at AT&T Stadium for the first time in four decades, providing an influx of both revenue and national attention for the SMU Mustangs.
SMU’s piqued interest in expansion follows in the wake of the university joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2023. The decision brought the athletics program into a new competitive environment and fueled a massive 46% jump in enrollment applications for the 2024-2025 season.
SMU has invested more than $120 million over the past 26 years to position the stadium as one of its most enduring highlights. The university most recently completed an ambitious $100 million project in 2024 to build the Garry Weber End Zone Complex, delivering a state-of-the-art, three-story structure that significantly expanded the stadium footprint and offerings.
