Mount Vernon unveils $30.9M plan for new recreation center

April 21, 2026

Mount Vernon city officials in Virginia have unveiled additional details about a planned indoor recreation center project. The city has revealed the price tag – $30.9 million – for its upcoming indoor recreation center. The project, which is currently in the design phase, is slated for construction in late August.

The nearly 54,700-square-foot building will be located just south of the Aquatic Zoo. It will feature ample sports offerings, including two full-size basketball courts that can be converted for volleyball and pickleball and a children’s play structure.

The city plans to build an indoor aquatic area with a zero-entry leisure pool. The pool will include four lap lanes, a water slide and an activity channel. In addition, the project calls for a splash pad and deep-water areas for swimming lessons and aquatic exercise classes.

Site plans call for an elevated walking and jogging track, a fitness area and a group exercise studio. The city will build a gymnasium, a weight and cardio room and an aerobic/dance room. Visitors will have access to both locker rooms and family changing rooms.

The project will feature multiple community meeting rooms alongside several support spaces. Additional features include a community room, kitchen, restrooms, office space and common areas.
