Fort Wayne secures federal funding for rail safety project

February 27, 2026

The city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, has received $23 million from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to build a $29.9 million overpass bridge over a rail line. Letting for the project is slated for 2028.

As part of the project’s vision to build an overpass over the Norfolk Southern Railway, the bridge will feature retaining walls with sloped banks within the railroad right-of-way. Once completed, the project will eliminate a grade crossing, increasing corridor safety and improving transit.

The completed bridge will be located between Airport Drive and Bluffton Road. The structure will reduce the number of crashes in the area, improve mobility and provide easier access to multiple critical sites, including a hospital, the local airport and a base for the National Guard.

The agreement between the FRA and the Fort Wayne City Council notes that the city will be responsible for covering any shortfalls caused by rising project costs.
