After originally abandoning the project, the Cumberland County Commissioners in North Carolina have revived plans to spend $100 million renovating the Crown Coliseum Theater.
During the Sept. 11 meeting, county commissioners directed the county manager to create and issue a Request for Qualifications/Proposals (RFQ/P) from contractors interested in the project. The county manager will bring back any new information gleaned from preparations for the next regularly scheduled infrastructure committee meeting.
While the county is moving forward with pursuing a revised approach to the project, a timeline for when the RFQ will be developed and issued has not yet been released. An RFP will only be published once the county has received responses to its to-be-issued RFQ.
On June 4, the county commissioners shut down plans to build a new $145 million Crown Event Center in Downtown Fayetteville. The decision to halt all construction came after the project was originally paused for review by a law firm. While the original vision for the project has been thoroughly scrapped, the county commissioners have confirmed that they will instead work toward fully renovating and modernizing the existing facility at a lower cost.
While further details are still being developed, the commissioners made several requests for information to be included in the RFQ/P. Aside from setting the budget to be no more than $100 million, the project would maximize seating capacity at both facilities at 2,500 and 3,000 seats respectively.
The requests will also seek proposals for either separating jointly completing both projects and for additional information regarding the scope and market study on the Crown Theater and Arena property.
