Abilene, Texas, selected as first site for President Trump’s $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative

January 24, 2025

In his first press conference since taking office earlier this week, President Donald Trump announced a nearly half-a-trillion-dollar artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project, and its first location will be in Texas.

The new company, Stargate, is a joint venture formed by OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank. Stargate will be investing up to $500 billion over the next four years to build what President Trump described as the “largest AI infrastructure project” in history.

“Stargate will be building the physical and virtual infrastructure to power the next generation of advancements in AI,” President Trump said at the press conference. “And this will include the construction of colossal data centers.”

The first data center complex buildout is already underway in Abilene, Texas, one of 10 currently being built.

According to an announcement on OpenAI’s website, Stargate will deploy $100 billion “immediately” to kickstart the initiative. Stargate says the project will “secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs and generate massive economic benefit for the entire world.”

Additionally, Stargate emphasizes the strategic importance of the project, noting that it will “provide a critical capability to protect the national security of America and its allies.”
