New York investing $100 million for roads ravaged by extreme weather

December 12, 2023

The state of New York is investing $100 million into statewide roadway projects to boost public safety by creating safer and more resilient roads against extreme weather.

The funds come from the New York Department of Transportation’s (NYDOT) $32.9 billion five-year capital plan and will support repaving projects across 66 locations spanning 568 lane miles.

Record-breaking weather including flooding and blizzards have left numerous roads in need of repair. The historic level of funding for the State Highway System will help renew state roadways while lengthening their lifespan. Roadwork on the projects is scheduled to begin in spring 2024.

The Southern Tier Region, covering 14 counties in Upstate New York, will receive the largest allocation of $19.5 million, including $8.1 million to resurface a major roadway in the city of Ithica.

Roadway improvement plans also include $17.4 million for the Mid-Hudson Region, including an $8 million project to resurface roadway portions in the towns of Deerpark and New Windsor.

Another $8 million will go toward resurfacing a section of the Southern State Parkway in Long Island, while another $4 million will be directed to resurfacing New York City’s Grand Central Parkway.
