$120M project to transform Lincoln’s railway infrastructure

The City of Lincoln has secured a $66.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration to improve safety and traffic flow at two major railroad crossings.

The funding will support the nearly $120 million 33rd Street and Cornhusker Improvement Project, which includes the construction of a new bridge over a commercial railway corridor. The project intends to eliminate at-grade rail crossings that currently cause more than three hours of daily traffic delays and have been the site of 20 crashes since their installation.

The improvements are expected to benefit commuters, businesses and the broader transportation infrastructure of Lincoln.

Once completed, the project will enhance safety by removing conflict points between trains and vehicles, reduce delays, alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users in north Lincoln. Infrastructure plans include two roundabouts, a viaduct and improvements to sidewalks and trails.

The project is currently in the planning phase, with final design to be completed in 2025 and construction expected to begin in 2028.
