The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County, Nevada, will spend $87 million to complete the Sun Valley Boulevard Corridor Improvement Project. Currently in the design phase, construction is set to begin in 2027.
The Sun Valley Corridor has been identified as a part of the region’s High Injury Network (HIN), counting among the most dangerous roadways in the state. The RTC will mitigate future risks to driver and pedestrian well-being by implementing a series of safety and active transportation improvements.
The commission will install new medians and improve traffic signals, better controlling traffic flow and increasing overall safety. The project vision also calls for implementing multimodal transportation improvements to accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and other nonmotorized travelers. This will include installing pedestrian-scale lighting.
Additional work will consist of building new transit stops with shelters and benches for public transit passengers. The commission will also build ADA compliant sidewalks and shared-use paths, install flashing beacon pedestrian crossings at select locations and prioritize enhanced drainage infrastructure.
The project vision calls for revamped drainage infrastructure along the corridor, starting with storm drain infrastructure within the roadway itself. The commission will build upstream detention to store stormwater temporarily and reduce peak runoff during inclement weather. The RTC will accompany that infrastructure with downstream channel improvements.
Plans include building retaining walls to support grading and roadway improvements along select areas. The RTC will also implement landscape monument features and xeriscape plantings.
