The University of Oregon (UO) is moving forward with building a $79 million child behavioral health building in Portland after the Board of Trustees approved funding issued earlier this year. Currently in the design phase, construction is anticipated to begin in 2026.
The facility will be a two-story, 54,000-square-foot academic and research building. The university will demolish four existing buildings in poor condition to provide the working site for the future facility. Following demolition, UO will install utilities ahead of major construction.
Planned features for the building will include welcoming spaces for children and families, enabling visitors to easily access free behavioral health services and participate in community outreach and educational programs. The building will contain an ample number of modern classrooms and instructional spaces designed to elevate the student experience.
Healthcare-centric amenities will include a behavioral health clinic dedicated to engaging the community through clinical research and innovative care. In addition, the facility will feature a telehealth center to provide remove care to rural and underserved communities.
The completed building will host two major university programs: the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health and the Prevention Science Institute. These programs will ensure UO retains its position as a leading educator and provider of quality workforce development.
