The University of Michigan at Flint (UM-Flint) will spend $40 million to complete the second phase of the College of Innovation and Technology Building project. Currently in the design phase, construction is slated to begin in September.
The project will finish work that is already underway in the project’s first phase, completing an academic teaching facility as part of the future Innovation and Technology Complex. The facility will cover 40,000 square feet and be located on the north end of the UM-Flint campus.
The university will install state-of-the-art instructional laboratories and research spaces designed to optimize flexibility. The final design is described as an open concept “mega lab” that can be divided into individual spaces. Additional areas will include general lecture classrooms, a flexible space for student demonstrations and events, small huddle rooms and collaboration zones.
All instruction and research spaces included in the building will be focused on a technology-rich curriculum, featuring labs dedicated to the following fields of study:
- Controlled Environment (humidity/particulate) Emerging Mobility.
- Clean Energy.
- Additive and Advanced (Smart) Manufacturing.
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
- Data Visualization and Immersive Experience.
Plans include incorporating faculty and administrative space as part of the building layouts, alongside student collaboration spaces. The university does not anticipate losing any permanent parking availability in the immediate area.
The facility will be adjacent to the Phase 1 building but not physically connected. The university plans to build a series of walkways and shared outdoor spaces to provide links between the two buildings.
