Seminole County officials move forward with $175M sports venue near airport

May 27, 2026

Seminole County commissioners in Florida unanimously voted forward plans for a proposed up to $175 million indoor sports complex adjacent to the Boombah Sports Complex and Sanford Orlando International Airport. The commissioners’ approval will advance the project into design and construction procurement phases.

The facility would be built on 28 acres already owned by the county and include 12 basketball courts, 22 volleyball courts and 25 beach volleyball courts, along with space for wrestling, pickleball and cheer competitions. Plans also call for seating for 2,500 spectators, accommodations for graduations of up to 7,500 attendees and banquet space for 540 guests at 70 tables.

The proposal includes a café or eating area, team and officials spaces, first aid facilities, office and IT space, an outdoor walking track, park amenities and restrooms serving the beach volleyball courts.

Site development would include soil fill, beach volleyball court preparation, pay parking, utilities, infrastructure improvements and roadway work.

Commissioners directed staff to pursue a tilt-wall design intended to provide flexible event space while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

The next steps approved by commissioners include soliciting architectural and engineering services, selecting a construction manager at risk and pursuing acquisition of adjacent land parcels for possible expansion.

County officials project the facility could generate $2.4 billion in economic impact and produce approximately $14 in economic benefit for every $1 invested.

The Boombah Sports Complex was completed a decade ago. The 102-acre complex includes 15 lighted fields for baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse. According to Wharton-Smith, which built the facility, Boombah cost $127 million and generated a $50 million economic impact in its first year.
