Montana Tech is set to finalize updates to its campus master plan, which includes renovations to century-old buildings, streets and outdoor spaces.
The university is collaborating with ThinkOne Architects on the plan, which uses $40 million in state funding to update areas of the campus, including the main and engineering halls, both of which are over 100 years old.
Some renovations, including those to key buildings and parking lots, are expected to take place within the next one to three years. Other elements, such as a pedestrian-centered throughway on Park Street, may break ground in the next 10 years.
“What we’re finding is that housing is a big issue on campus — that’s a primary need,” ThinkOne architect Bill Hanson said. “Parking on campus is an issue, too. “
The plan is expected to be finalized and published within the next two to three months, with construction slated to begin in 2026.
Elements of the plan include:
- New academic spaces, research labs and faculty offices in the main hall, along with mechanical, electrical and accessibility updates
- Modernized classrooms, student spaces and offices at the engineering hall, which will also see updates to mechanical, electrical and accessibility
- New space for academic support services, career preparation coaching and study areas with a variety of seating will transform the existing library into a 21st-century learning space at the campus library
- Modernization of the student union building through a phased approach
- Significant upgrades to Park Street and the campus plaza to improve pedestrian safety and create a more distinctive entrance to campus
