Middlebury College in Vermont is in the design phase for a $50 million art museum construction project. The project is part of a larger initiative to reconfigure and improve the college’s north end of campus. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.

The 35,000-square-foot Museum of Art will replace the campus’ existing museum, tripling its size and containing up to 7,000 unique pieces. The facility will double the available gallery and teaching spaces, creating greater accessibility to the college’s collection.

The building’s larger footprint provides new opportunities to enhance educational opportunities, including several multipurpose, flexible areas for performances, learning and exhibitions. This will include dedicated areas for object study, allowing students to physically interact with select art and artifacts included in the collection.

The site will feature research areas and on-site storage, making it easier for faculty and staff to share and present objects as part of the curriculum. In addition, the design emphasizes sustainability, centering around using sustainable materials, abiding by high environmental standards and instituting energy-efficient building practices.
