The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) has revealed plans for a $100 million Interstate 35 improvement initiative. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.
The project targets a stretch of road between the cities of Huxley and Ames and an interchange between I-35 and U.S. Highway 30. The reconstruction effort builds off ongoing work to widen I-35 between Ankeny and Huxley.
The department will prioritize widening the Huxley to Ames portion of the interstate highway from its current configuration to six lanes, dedicating three travel lanes going in each direction. The reconstructed lanes will connect to the recently replaced South Skunk River bridges.
As part of its efforts to enhance the I-34/US 30 interchange, Iowa DOT will replace the interstate flyover bridges over the highway. The department will take the opportunity to lower US 30 lanes through the interchange to address bridge clearance issues.
Additional work will include reconstructing three loop ramps to better align with the new configuration. The department will also reconstruct a slip ramp from eastbound US 30 to southbound I-35.
The department recently received community feedback for the reconstruction project through an open house.
