Officials with the city of Glendale, California, will soon move into the final design portion of the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk – the third and final phase covering the approximately $31 million bridge project. According to the project website, construction is slated to begin in 2027.
The Glendale-Los Angeles Garden River Bridge Project will provide a direct connection to parks on either side of the river, prioritizing pedestrian mobility and landscaping highlighting green infrastructure. The 320-foot bridge will be a unique two-span curvilinear structure with two planted, canopied seating areas.
Plans include supporting the bridge atop two supporting piers placed within the channel. Additional amenities include safety railings, trash cans, pet waste stations, interpretive signs, pedestrian safety lighting and access gates. The project may also include solar paneling or planting over the canopies.
Critically, the bridge will offer a safe pathway across the river with shared-use paths for pedestrians and bicyclists. These will connect with existing bikeways and paths already completed in earlier phases of the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk project.
The bridge’s greenscape has been pivotal in informing the design process. Aside from the raised and in-ground planting beds, the city will emphasize a broad palette of native flora. To better connect the bridge to surrounding transit networks, the city will reconstruct nearby paths and roads to improve alignment.
