Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey, Idaho, is moving forward with a $10 million project to build an air traffic control tower after releasing a Draft Environmental Assessment on Jan. 17, 2026. The project will soon move into the design phase, with construction slated to begin in 2027.
The airport will build an approximately 84-foot tower on a roughly 0.3-acre site southeast of the terminal building. The structure will have 17-foot-high antennas alongside various support features including fencing and parking.
The tower will decommission and replace the existing facility, slated for demolition and disposal at a later date. The project will also remove any infrastructure associated with the current tower, including a portion of the surrounding fence.
The project will extend or relocate access roads and utilities to connect to the new air traffic control tower. Additional work will consist of installing modern air traffic control electronic equipment in the new tower and relocate the existing radio communications link repeater.
Once completed, the tower will have enough space for four air traffic controller positions. The design will include upgrades for resistance against seismic events that may occur in the future.
