DOE offers $293M for collaborative AI-driven scientific research projects

March 26, 2026

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is offering $293 million in funding for research teams using artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle complex national scientific and energy challenges. including biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, critical materials, quantum information science and nuclear energy.

The funding opportunity is part of the agency’s broader Genesis Mission initiative, which brings together interdisciplinary teams from national laboratories, universities and the private sector to accelerate scientific discovery. The effort centers on using AI to help researchers model, predict and analyze complex systems more efficiently than traditional methods allow.

Federal officials say the initiative is intended to address more than 20 national challenges across a range of advanced scientific disciplines. Eligible applicants include universities, national laboratories, private companies and academic research organizations, with an emphasis on collaborative, multi-institution teams.

Federally affiliated entities, including DOE national laboratories and federally funded research centers, are eligible to participate but must apply directly as team members rather than as subrecipients.

Applicants may participate in multiple teams but may only serve as the lead organization on one proposal. The opportunity is structured in two phases, with Phase I awards up to $750,000 for initial nine-month projects. Phase II awards range up to $15 million for three-year projects, and are open to both new applicants and teams advancing from Phase I.

The funding opportunity includes multiple submission deadlines. Phase I applications are due April 28. Phase II letters of intent are due April 28, with full applications due May 19. Additional Phase II submissions tied to Phase I awards are due December 17.

The Genesis Mission funding opportunity announcement reflects a broader push by the Department of Energy to integrate AI into large-scale scientific research and accelerate solutions to complex national challenges.
