According to the Electric Power Research Institute, data centers could consume up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation annually by 2030, up from 4% in 2023.
The leases are in regions near Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine that could produce about 13 gigawatts of clean energy, enough to power more than 4.5 million homes.
The funds will support district initiatives to expand electric vehicle infrastructure, transition its fleet to zero-emission vehicles and reduce air pollution.
The announcement covers four renewable energy projects that will bring new transmission lines, solar facilities and over 4.7 gigawatts of renewable energy.
The selected communities will focus on projects such as building efficiency and electrification, clean transportation, energy infrastructure improvements, microgrid development, renewable energy and job training.
Hydropower accounts for 27% of the country's renewable electricity generation, with the bonus that it does not depend on real-time weather conditions to produce electricity like wind and solar.
