Airport improvement nationwide receive $123 million boost

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is making more than $123 million available in grants for airfield, safety and other improvement projects at airports nationwide.

The FAA is administering the funds through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which provides grants mostly to public agencies to plan and develop public-use airports.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) provides $15 billion for airport projects through the AIG program. The FAA has made nearly $9 billion in AIG grants available since the BIL was enacted in 2021.

This round of funding supports projects at 235 airports and Washington, D.C. Projects include building and improving airport facilities, repairs to runways and taxiways, maintaining airfield elements such as lighting and signage or purchasing equipment to operate and maintain airports.

“The grants we’re announcing today will help modernize hundreds of airports across the country and better meet the current and future demands of the flying public,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

Notable projects selected for this round of funding include:

  • $6.8 million to Miami International Airport to support the final phase of the rehabilitation of the existing apron to minimize foreign object debris and improve safety.
  • $4.6 million to Eastern Iowa Airport to replace the existing airport lighting vault equipment and the design and construction phase for reconstructing Taxiway D.
  • $3.8 million to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California to buy a new escalator in Terminal A and new escalator in Terminal B.
  • $3.5 million to Kit Carson County Airport in Colorado to reconstruct Taxiway A pavement to improve safety.

The FAA allocated total of $243.7 million in grants earlier this year to fund airport infrastructure projects designed to help reduce delays and confusion for passengers as well as minimize security risks.
