A planned $264 million replacement of Parker Middle School in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, has advanced into schematic design, moving the project closer to final funding approval and construction. The project carries a $211.1 million construction budget and is being developed through a construction manager at risk delivery model.
During the current phase, Chelmsford Public Schools and the project’s construction manager will refine the preferred replacement concept, establish a detailed scope, update cost estimates and develop the construction schedule. The completed design package will be submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority, which is expected to prepare a Project Scope and Budget Agreement before the project can advance toward construction.
The preliminary design calls for improved traffic flow with additional parking, dedicated parent pick-up and drop-off lanes, and separate bus circulation lanes.
Plans also set aside space for athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, open green space and a natural restoration area surrounding the stream that currently runs beneath the existing Parker School building.
Upon completion of the schematic design phase, the Massachusetts School Building Authority will prepare a Project Scope and Budget Agreement to move the project toward construction.
