$175 million Texas school bond would improve facilities, increase security

March 1, 2024

Residents in Copperas Cove will vote on the a $175 million bond package to renovate a high school, upgrade facilities districtwide, increase safety and security and relocate health and athletics facilities. It has been nearly 20 years since the Copperas Cove Independent School District’s (CCISD) last bond election. Election day is May 4. Early voting is between April 22 and April 30.

The largest project would be renovating and expanding Copperas Cove High School. CCISD would add 55 classrooms and science labs, build a cafeteria with an outdoor eating area and expand the band hall. Plans include renovating the restrooms and making them ADA-compliant. The district will also upgrade the school’s electrical system.

CCISD would also relocate the tennis courts and build an accompanying fieldhouse, relocate the softball field and batting cages and build a soccer practice field with a fieldhouse. The district would also install turf on the softball, baseball and football fields while building fieldhouses for the softball and baseball programs. The final project includes building a pavilion to cover the multipurpose artificial turf practice field.

Miss Jewell Elementary School would also receive renovation work if the bond is approved. As part of the elementary school renovations and upgrades, the district would update the playgrounds at six elementary campuses. All playgrounds would include AD-compliant surfaces and shade covers.

The district would leverage the bond to improve safety and security across the entire district. This includes building exterior walkway enclosures at Williams/Ledger, Fairview/Jewell and Clements/Parsons elementary schools. Other plans include integrating access control systems, upgrading surveillance cameras and installing electronic door monitoring systems.

Copperas Cove is 68 miles north of Austin.
