Funding available for businesses to develop AI tools to help drive complete Streets

February 5, 2024

The U.S. Department of Transportation is making a total of $15 million available to small businesses to develop ways to use artificial intelligence to help cities develop and implement Complete Streets technology.

The funds are available through the Complete Streets AI Initiative, which helps businesses develop tools to help transportation agencies site, design and deploy technology needed to improve transportation for all users.

Specifically, the initiative is seeking innovative ways to use big data, internet of things, AI, computer vision and machine learning with satellite, aerial and street-level imagery, sensor-based and vehicle data and other sources. The goal is to develop interactive decision-support tools that state and local agencies can use to generate maps and other insights to enable Complete Streets improvements.

Pre-solicitations are now being accepted through March 1, 2024. Solicitation is tentatively scheduled to open March 11. DOT anticipates funding for up to three phases, which are designed to move early-stage concepts out of research and development and into nationwide products.
