Virginia announces $23.6 million in community development block grants

February 14, 2025

Virginia will award more than $23.6 million in grant funding for projects aimed at rehabilitating housing, revitalizing downtown districts and improving water and sewer infrastructure across the state.

The funding will be made available through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

CDBG funds can be used to provide new or improved water and sewer systems in rural areas, rehabilitate housing in declining neighborhoods, revitalize commercial districts and provide facilities for a variety of needed services, such as health care clinics in underserved areas.

“While each of the 33 awarded projects support vastly different community goals, they all foster strong local partnerships, diverse regional economies and a higher quality of life for Virginians,” Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick said.

Projects include housing rehabilitation, water and sewer improvements and community service facility enhancements.

Here are some of the awardees:

  • Town of Lebanon – $2 million for Main Street Villas Infrastructure.
  • Town of Wytherville – $1.92 million for Monroe Street Housing Production.
  • Town of Lawrenceville – $1.75 million for Park Street Community Project.
  • City of Norton – $1.74 million for Southside Comprehensive Community Development Phase II.
