University of Alabama to invest in battery research center renovations

March 13, 2025

The University of Alabama (UA) will use $15.7 million to renovate the AMP Battery Research Center (AMP BRC). Currently in the design phase, bidding for construction is anticipated to begin in April 2025. The construction date has not yet been finalized.

The project will renovate more than 8,700 square feet within the Alabama Innovation and Mentoring of Entrepreneurs Building (AIME). Renovations will create a state-of-the-art facility for research.

Once completed, the renovated structure will feature a pilot line laboratory for pouch, prismatic and cylindrical cell production. Other additions include dedicated areas for materials and chemical receiving. The university will supplement ongoing research efforts with expanded office and storage spaces.

In addition, the facility will be equipped with advanced, multi-scale, multidisciplinary equipment to facilitate battery research and education. This will include equipment for pouch cell assembly, pouch cell formation, electrode preparation, cycling room, formation and aging and battery characterization.

UA will build an additional 1,500-square-foot mechanical mezzanine through the infill of high bay space. Plans include installing furniture, fixtures, security and access controls and telecommunications technology.
