Tyngsborough advances $20M fire station project

January 30, 2026

The town of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, will build a new fire station. While original estimates projected the cost would be around $13.1 million, the final cost is expected to be up to $20 million. Officials anticipate releasing the final estimate during the final design and construction stage of the project in May.

The one-story facility will cover nearly 19,800 square feet of space, connecting to an upper mezzanine and a three-story tower. The building will contain a 7,085-square-foot apparatus bay, including five double deep drive through bays and a stair tower leading to the mezzanine and tower. The tower will feature storage, railing, a manhole, bailout windows, a bay roof and parapet.

Included in the apparatus bay, the town will build dedicated spaces for a mechanic’s work room, EMS storage, regular storage and an air room and oxygen space. Located near the stairs to the tower, the bay will include hose storage and hose drying space.

To provide further firematic support, the layout includes a firematic decontamination room with two showers and restroom for the apparatus bay. The transition area between the apparatus bay and the rest of the station will connect to a turnout gear room with lockers.

The station is designed to meet the firefighters’ needs on a daily basis. These include a dayroom, workstation and exercise room. The layout includes a kitchen, pantry, food storage and dining area.

A total of eight bunk rooms will accommodate the firefighters alongside personal lockers and three baths and showers. Additional space will be allocated for the quartermaster supply storage area, housekeeping and laundry.

The administration areas account for the second largest space in the building outside of the apparatus bays, covering nearly 2,800 square feet. This area will include an ECO and training room with storage, communications and radio room and a conference room. There will be offices dedicated to the fire chief, assistant fire chief, administrative assistant and a shared office for fire prevention, EMS and training. The design features areas for the administration files storage room, copier and office supplies area and IT server room and storage.

Various public spaces throughout the facility include a public lobby with restrooms and family relations and first aid. The station will also feature an entry vestibule, custodial closet and mechanical, electrical and plumbing room. A hardscape patio is planned for the building’s exterior, along with a sizable parking lot.
