TxDOT to expand Central Texas highway with $145M project

December 19, 2025

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will spend $145 million to expand Farm to Market Road 812 in Central Texas, providing a safe, efficient option for traffic between US Route 183 and State Highway 21. The project will go out for bid in late 2027, with construction beginning in Fall 2028.

To facilitate timely construction, TxDOT has divided the project into three distinct segments:

  • US 183 to SH 130.
  • SH 130 to Peterson Road.
  • 0.32 miles east of Elroy Road to SH 21.

The letting process in 2027 will only be for the first segment of the project. The department anticipates opening bids for the final two segments in 2031. The total project length will cover 9.5 miles of FM 812 and 0.75 miles of FM 973.

The existing FM 812 is not conducive for providing effective traffic flow between the two major highways, significantly reducing regional mobility for increasing traffic volumes. The competed project will provide a direct connection to US 183 and SH 21, providing additional capacity and alleviating congestion.

As part of the project, TxDOT will expand the current two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided structure. The reconstructed roadway will feature a continuous left-turn lane. This portion will also call for relocating a 1.5-mile section of FM 812 to tie in with the William Cannon Drive intersection at US 183. The relocation will allow the department to remove the existing FM 812 S-curve.

In addition to the expansion and relocation elements of the project, the department will upgrade four bridges along FM 812 and one bridge along FM 973. TxDOT also plans to build a shared-use path, sidewalks, open ditches, cross-culverts and storm sewer systems.
