The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded $96 million to transit agencies to support transit programs in rural and urban communities statewide.
The funding will enable transit agencies to further expand transit services and improve accessibility features. Both rural and urban residents will benefit from better, safer and more reliable services due to the influx of awards.
In total, 64 transit agencies will split the transit funding package. Those transit agencies will use their share of the funds to provide support for seniors and residents with disabilities, improve mobility options and manage existing transit services.
In Wichita Falls, the city’s transit system in conjunction with SHARP Lines Rural Public Transportation will collaborate to provide better transportation services for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Efforts will include installing needed accommodations to make transit easier and to address other unique needs of vulnerable residents.
The East Texas Council of Governments are also noted for their efforts to enhance transit services for on-demand transportation. Public transit would serve seniors, students, residents with disabilities and those seeking or keeping employment across 14 counties. The rural East Texas transit service area currently uses GoBus for transportation.
In addition, the Concho Valley Transit District will continue to provide critical transit service for underserved residents, primarily seniors and individuals with disabilities. Their service area covers 13 counties, providing on-demand transportation and leveraging multiple local resources to best serve the needs of its ridership.
The recently announced allocation is the latest in TxDOT’s efforts to provide high-quality, reliable transit for underserved members of the community. In 2024, the department distributed enough funding to deliver more than 24 million rides across the state’s rural and urban communities, according to TxDOT officials.
