The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will distribute $30.9 million to develop and enhance outdoor recreational opportunities. The recipients will provide a 50/50 match to the awards to build trails, native landscaping, playgrounds, splash pads, sports fields and other amenities.
Some of the projects receiving state support include:
The city of Houston Parks and Recreation Department will improve the Mason Park Community Center. The facility has extensive infrastructure degradation and safety concerns due to its age. The project will enable the department to replace the roof and reinforce the building’s infrastructure and envelope.
Fort Worth Parks and Recreation Department will renovate the city zoo’s Hall of Wonders. The project will complete building updates and develop conceptualization plans for the hall’s ongoing development efforts. The department is also receiving support to make improvements at Oak Grove Park, including sports courts, shaded playground equipment, pavilions, native plantings, trails and site amenities.
The city of Harlingen will build its first ever indoor recreation center. The completed project will be a one-story, 23,000-square-foot facility featuring recreational opportunities such as pickleball and basketball courts.
Brownwood will spend its share to perform critical renovation work on the Bennie Houston Recreation Center. As part of the project, the city will build a larger reception hall and lobby area; update the gym’s flooring, lighting and ceiling; install a kitchen with a serving bar and prep tables; and build a dedicated multi-purpose room for study, classrooms or game activities. The city also anticipates building new ADA-compliant restrooms and a staff office.
