The city of Sugar Land, Texas, will spend roughly $63.2 million to build a new police department building and renovate the existing police facility. Construction is expected to begin in October 2026.
The current police department building no longer possesses the needed space nor amenities required to meet the needs of the modern force, according to city officials. Since it opened its doors in 1996, the department has more than doubled its staff and has incorporated new programs and specialized units into its framework. The demand for new services and additional personnel has driven the city to make significant changes to the existing structure.
The city will build a new police headquarters covering approximately 50,000 square feet. The project vision calls for a hardened, technologically advanced facility implementing the latest solutions to enhance operations and improve public safety.
As part of the expansion, the headquarters will feature a dispatch department and an emergency operations center (EOC). The city will implement a phased construction strategy for the project, starting with new construction before moving on to renovations.
Plans include expanding the courts on the first floor of the existing police and courts building and renovating the second floor – covering a total of 43,000 square feet. In addition, the city will incorporate several site improvements into the renovation project, including:
- Parking expansion.
- Security fencing.
- Backup power generation.
- Landscaping.
The project funding comes from a voter-approved bond from November 2024. The bond earmarked $350 million for a variety of initiatives, including $144.5 million for public safety.
