Officials in Rapid City, South Dakota, have approved more than $44 million in funding to advance a $100 million major expansion project at the Rapid City Regional Airport (RCRA). Construction is expected to begin within the next two years.
The project will revolve around building five new gates, expanding the concourse from seven to 12 gates in total. Additional features will include expanded passenger holdrooms, better accessibility and improved passenger amenities.
While the funding will predominantly focus on the gate expansion aspects, the RCRA is finalizing a designer for a swathe of upcoming airport expansion and improvement projects. This will include efforts to build an administrative parking lot with associated landscaping to the east of the terminal, replacing the previous lot.
Additional plans include building a baggage claim belt and expanding the airport’s car rental wing. The airport will expand the terminal apron and ramp area to accommodate the new gates and build a remote terminal apron for use by commercial service aircraft.
The RCRA will build a runway that runs parallel to Runway 14/42, which currently struggles with gradient issues. The airport will maintain the 8,700 foot approach, with the expectation that the project will apply a precision approach procedure to Runway 14. The final project listed in the airports Request for Qualifications will involve building a taxilane that expands towards the new runway while providing roadside access.
