Pittsburgh-area district invests $30 million to renovate schools

The Plum Borough School District (PBSD) in Pennsylvania will spend $30 million to renovate an elementary school and middle school. The project will update interior spaces, address HVAC issues and repair infrastructure across both campuses. PBSD recently contracted a designer for both projects. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2025.

O’Block Elementary School will receive most of the funds for renovation work. The project will five additional classrooms to an existing building for the overall building. The addition that will add between 15,000 to 17,000 square feet, increase the size and number of special education classrooms and install a fire-rated egress stair.

PBSD will renovate the building to create larger classrooms, update interior finishes, realign partitions and address issues with the offices and nurse suite. In addition, the district will update the building’s floor, wall and ceiling finishes. Plans include replacing doors and windows, installing a canopy at the parent pick-up location and replacing the roof system.

The district will replace the HVAC system along with plumbing equipment, fixtures, electrical systems and lighting. PBSD will build an entrance drive loop, reconfigure the parking lot for more spaces, build retaining wall structures, install a playground and replace kitchen equipment.

Plum Middle School will receive exterior building improvements, including a replacement roof system, a better loading dock area, fixed and operable windows and replacement doors. The district will also improve the building’s interior design aesthetics, functionality and safety.

In addition, PBSD will modify the building’s HVAC system by replacing controls, boilers and chillers. The district will also replace the domestic hot water heater, lighting and kitchen equipment.

PBSD is located 18.2 miles east of Pittsburgh.
