A project to build a 10-mile extension to an electric light rail in New Jersey is taking the next step with New Jersey Transit issuing a request for proposals seeking a contractor to create a draft environmental impact statement.
The Northern Branch Project involves extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County, NJ. The extension would provide light-rail service from the current end at Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen to a new terminal at Englewood Hospital.
The new RFP was issued after the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) rescinded its notice of intent (NOI) to consider NJ Transit’s previously submitted environmental impact statement in 2023, citing changes in environmental conditions, including flood plains, storm water management and air quality which have occurred since 2007.
The scope of work required to update the environmental impact statement requires a new contract, NJ Transit said.
The extension will include seven new station stops in five cities.
The train will operate on West Side Avenue in North Bergen, then on existing railroad right-of-way owned by CSX Transportation (CSX) between 91st Street in North Bergen and the northern border of Englewood.
The project will also introduce new station stops in North Bergen, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia and Englewood.
