Public officials in New Jersey are announcing a new milestone for a proposed Route 1 corridor improvement project in Middlesex County. The project, which secured $50 million in state funding nearly a decade ago, is at the 60% completion point in the design phase.
The new North Brunswick Train Station, planned along the Northeast Corridor in Middlesex County, is intended to relieve traffic congestion along the Route 1 corridor and expand commuter rail access in a fast-growing section of the county that has seen significant residential and commercial development.
The Middlesex County Improvement Authority has overseen the project’s design and engineering process in coordination with NJ Transit, which operates service along the corridor. County officials say the collaboration is moving the process closer to the 90% design mark.
Part of the project’s appeal for local officials and developers is its connection to the Main Street North Brunswick transit village, a growing mixed-use community with major retailers, a hotel and new residential development that the station would serve once operational.
Once final engineering is completed and the design advances to roughly 90%, the project is expected to move toward bid solicitation and construction scheduling, though a firm groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.
