New prison project set for Lincoln

September 13, 2023

Nebraska – Nebraska’s Gov. Jim Pillen recently announced a 1,512-bed prison will be built in Lincoln to replace the current Nebraska State Penitentiary.

Design and construction costs for the state-led project are estimated to be $350 million.

“We understand the project is in the design phase and anticipate future conversations about the needs of their project,” T.J. McDowell, chief of staff for Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, said after Pillen’s announcement.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024.
