Louisiana schools, facilities receive $21.8M in hurricane aid

May 1, 2025

Louisiana will receive more than $21.8 million in Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) reimbursements for permanent repairs and recovery efforts that followed Hurricanes Laura and Ida.

The two storms, which occurred in 2020 and 2021, both made landfall as Category 4 hurricanes that caused nearly $100 billion in damage and at least 138 fatalities.

The funding supports schools, hospitals and airport infrastructure in need after the storms.

Awards include:

  • $11.2 million to the Terrebone Parish School Board to replace damaged school property.
  • $7.1 million to the Calcasieu Parish School Board for permanent repairs to Barbe High School.
  • $1.2 million to the Ochnser Clinic Foundation for repairs to the Kenner Ochsner Medical office building.
  • $1 million for repairs made to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

These allocations are part of FEMA’s ongoing commitment to assist Louisiana in rebuilding and strengthening its infrastructure against future disasters. The funding not only addresses immediate repair needs but also supports long-term resilience planning for communities across the state.

As of April 2025, FEMA had obligated over $2.6 billion in Public Assistance grants for Hurricane Ida recovery efforts in Louisiana, underscoring the extensive impact of the storm and the federal government’s role in supporting the state’s recovery.
