This week’s profile is Raymond Lee, city manager of Greeley, Colorado.
Public career highlights: In my current role at Greeley, I oversee the daily operations and long-term strategic planning for a rapidly growing city of 115,000 citizens. Prior to Greeley, I served as the director of public works for Amarillo, Texas, where I managed critical infrastructure projects and multiple city departments. Before Amarillo, I held various positions in the city of Dallas, including assistant director of street services, where I managed a large workforce and substantial budgets.
What I like best about public service: The profound and direct impact it has on the lives of community members. Being in a position to drive initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents, improve city infrastructure and promote sustainable growth is incredibly fulfilling. Public service offers the unique opportunity to address real-world challenges and make a tangible difference in the community.
The best advice I’ve ever received: “Lead with empathy and listen actively.” This advice has been a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. Understanding the perspectives and needs of community members, staff and stakeholders is crucial for effective governance.
People might be interested to know that: Outside of my professional life, I am deeply passionate about traveling and experiencing other cultures. This passion has taken me to numerous countries around the world, where I have immerse myself in the local customs, traditions.
One thing I wish more people knew about the city of Greeley: I wish more people understood the complexity and breadth of services provided by local government. Our work goes beyond basic infrastructure and public safety; it encompasses a wide range of functions, from economic development, housing and community engagement to sustainability initiatives and cultural programs.
