The city of Dallas will spend $121 million to complete the second phase of the Klyde Warren Park expansion project. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026.
Phase 2 of the project will follow through on concepts laid out for development in 2020 but were delayed due to the pandemic. Once completed, the site will significantly expand the park’s greenspace and community footprint in the heart of the city. The project will be fueled by a mixture of public funding and private donations, prioritizing the construction of a 1.7-acre deck and event pavilion over the freeway.
The expansion will be on the western side of the property, extending the 5.4-acre park and covering a gap between two streets. The planned facility will be a three-story building that will operate as a venue for events and provide a roof terrace.
The first two floors will be a climate-controlled pavilion covering 24,000 square feet. The third floor will be reserved for an 8,000 square foot roof terrace. The structure will be located on Jacobs Lawn, spanning 37,000 square feet and operating as an outdoor venue. During the winter seasons, the lawn will be able to convert to an ice rink.
Additional pavilion spaces and amenities will include lobby areas, utility and security spaces, a visitor center, indoor and outdoor cafes and a ballroom. Additional features include restrooms, a boardroom, office areas, a warming kitchen and a green room.
Key components of the park expansion will facilitate economic development as well as community and recreational opportunities. The city plans to capitalize on the site’s location to usher in additional open space, event space, retail and parking on the deck structures. Mobility is a key concern, with concepts taking into consideration pedestrian and transit connections to nearby amenities and stations.
