Adam RollinsIllinois State University (ISU) will spend $41.5 million to build a College of Engineering campus in Bloomington. While the project has been approved, a construction date has not yet been released.
Currently, inadequate instructional and lab space make it difficult to accommodate demand for engineering programs. The project will expand ISU’s capacity to handle new programs, providing additional lecture, lab, research and collaborative learning spaces.
The project will build an engineering facility to house the new electrical, mechanical and general engineering degree programs. The building will also provide space for companion programs in engineering and information technology.
The university will complete the project in two phases after purchasing property for the campus. Phase 1 will accommodate approximately 600 engineering students. Phase 2 will renovate additional space at the property and will accommodate more than 1,000 students.
Concepts to build the new campus have been in the works for nearly a decade, starting in 2016 with the intent to establish additional engineering programs. Program development began in 2019, kickstarting the university’s process to expand curriculum offerings for electrical, mechanical and general engineering.
