ODOT advances nearly $100M rebuild of I-77 corridor

January 15, 2026

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is planning a major reconstruction project for Interstate 77 south of downtown Cleveland. Officials expect construction, which is estimated to cost $95.8 million, to run from 2027 to 2031.

The project would cover the stretch between Grant and Broadway avenues in Cleveland, Newburgh Heights and Cuyahoga Heights, a corridor used by nearly 100,000 vehicles each day. The corridor current alignment restricts access for emergency vehicles and does not provide enough room for disabled vehicles, according to ODOT officials.

Plans call for higher median walls, a wider center median and replacement of the highway’s aging drainage system. ODOT says the changes would make it easier for emergency vehicles to reach crashes and give disabled drivers more room to pull out of traffic, while also helping manage stormwater during heavy rain. The roadway will remain three lanes in each direction once the project is complete, though drivers can expect two-lane traffic and temporary ramp closures during construction.

ODOT is seeking feedback from stakeholders and the public through Jan. 16. Additional project details can be found on the department’s website.
